Weekly Internet Marketing Tips – SEO Basics

Welcome to the first installment of “Weekly Internet Marketing Tips” where we delve into all things concerned with online marketing. Today’s topic is SEO basics. For those of you that are unaware of what SEO is, it stands for search engine optimization and does exactly what its name implies. Search engine optimization employs the use of varied keywords pertaining to a certain industry and inserts them effectively into locations on and off a website to increase its overall rankings in top search engines such as Google, Yahoo! And Bing. Without proper SEO implemented into a website, there is a good chance that anyone not directly looking for it will ever find it.

Below are just a few bits of information to help you familiarize yourself with the basics of Search engine optimization, or SEO.

–          Do not “Keyword Stuff” – Previous pioneers of SEO would include pages within their site that might be nothing more than the same keyword written over and over again. This actually used to work. For a period of time, most search engines did recognize an abundance of a certain keyword and return it as a high result on a search engine results page. However, over time, search engines (especially Google) have continued to change their algorithm to make it more competitive to reach the top of search engine results for a specified keyword. Now, keyword density vs. keyword rank plays a much larger role, but that’s stronger topic for a different day. For now, just remember that a keyword should not appear more than once for every few hundred words.

–          Page Title vs. Article Title – An important aspect of SEO is providing new and relevant content on your website. A simple way to do this is to have a blog. Writing industry-specific articles on a regular basis will allow a site to garner a better reputation. For blogs, the page title and the article title should be different. The article title should be eye-catching and draw in the reader, while the page title should be optimized for search engines. A good example would be something like “Are animal-print swimsuits taking over summer fashion?” for the article title, and “Summer Swimsuit Fashion” for the page title. This way, readers will want to check out the blog, and search engines will want to rank it highly.

–          Create off-page SEO with Backlinks – Quality backlinks are vital to a well-run Miami Internet marketing campaign. To create a backlink to your page, there must be a quality link elsewhere on the Internet that points back to somewhere on your website. One of the simplest ways to do this is to utilize social bookmarking and other content sites to provide extra informative content about your industry. Posting an article on squidoo, for example, that has keywords in it that link back to your website will be beneficial for backlinks. Also, sharing posts made on your blog on social bookmarking sites like reddit, or digg can help provide quality backlinks.
